Sales of Barbie Dolls are in Decline

Since her introduction way back in 1959, the Barbie doll has become iconic not only in the toy industry, but in pop culture in general. Barbie is now without a doubt the most famous and successful line of dolls of all time. It would be hard to find a woman in the English speaking world that did not own at least one Barbie doll as a child. However, the world of Barbie and Ken is currently having a rough time. In fact, sales of Barbie dolls and related products have fallen for four consecutive quarters. This has happened while the doll industry as a whole has seen an increase of six percent in sales during the same time period.

Don’t shed any tears for Mattel. Barbie is still the number one doll line in the world, raking in roughly $1.3 billion every year. That having been said, industry researchers are at a loss to figure out why Barbie is not attracting young girls the way she once did. Some of her decline in popularity may have to do with changing tastes. Another line of Mattel dolls called Monster High is now the second biggest selling doll line in the world. Annual sales of Monster High products have reached $500 million annually. Even more impressive is that Monster High has only been around for three years.

Barbie has also been criticized in recent years for having a negative effect on the body image of girls. So where does Barbie go from here? Bryan Stockton, the CEO of Mattel, is not overly concerned about Barbie’s future, saying that most toys have a five year period of popularity. While Monster High’s popularity will eventually fade, Barbie will be around for a long time.
